ACT

As part of the admission requirements, universities require admissions tests. ACT is the most common assessment used by schools in this area. It is recommended that the ACT be taken the spring or summer of the junior year. If the student is not satisfied with his or her score and they plan to study, it is recommended that the student retake the test in December or February of his/her senior year. A score of 18 is required for admittance into most SD colleges and universities, (22 for MN). An ACT score of 24 will qualify a student for a guaranteed scholarship at the five state institutions.

Some schools are now requiring the writing portion of the ACT. The www.actstudent.org/start website lists these schools that require the test. Currently no South Dakota schools require the writing portion of the test.
Many technical schools are now requiring the ACT test. It is in the student's best interest to have taken the ACT test at least once, even if he/she are not planning to go to school at this time.

SD Board of Regents Remedial Course Requirements
The five South Dakota State universities are now using the subtest scores on the ACT test for placement in math and English classes for all students. The details to these placement requirements may be found at www.sdbor.edu/administration/academics/Placement.htm. An English sub-score of 18 and a Math sub-score of 20 or above is necessary to be placed in a regular college level course. Any score below these numbers will require the student to take a remedial course before moving forward in his/her studies. A student may request to take a placement test called a "Compass" at the school to challenge this placement.
